Medication management
What to expect
After a comprehensive evaluation, some clients may have medication prescribed as part of their treatment plan. New medications will be prescribed thoughtfully and carefully, considering the client’s individual health, situation, and goals. Depending on the medication and condition being treated, you can expect to be seen more frequently at first to ensure there are no adverse effects and to get the dosage right.
Controlled substance medications require an in-person appointment prior to initiation. These medications can not be prescribed with refills and require monthly renewal. Clients prescribed a controlled substance can expect to have an appointment every month until stabilized and then at least every two months. The New York State Prescription Monitoring Program Registry will be accessed prior to sending each controlled substance prescription. The program allows for a better understanding of a client’s controlled substance prescription history for more informed prescribing and dispensing. It provides a quick, confidential online report of all controlled substance prescriptions for one year prior to the practitioner and the pharmacist. All New York State licensed prescribers (excluding veterinarians), pharmacists, and authorized designees may access the PMP Registry. A client may request a copy of their controlled substance history by contacting the Bureau of Narcotic Enforcement.
In addition to prescription medications, vitamins and supplements can be a part of a holistic treatment plan. The supplement industry is poorly regulated, but there are several nutritional supplements with good evidence for mental health. Reputable brands and sources will be recommended.
